Word Insight™

An innovative new product to help students prepare for standardized vocabulary tests. Word Insight™ utilizes revolutionary perceptual learning techniques along with advanced computer-based presentation concepts to provide an optimal learning environment.

Best Basic Math™

Welcome to a remarkable new product to help children learn basic math facts! Best Basic Math™ incorporates revolutionary techniques of computer-based learning and perceptual learning to foster this important foundation of later learning.

Even in an age of calculators, every child must learn basic math facts. When we first begin to learn arithmetic, along with the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, there are some basic facts that need to be understood and remembered. For example, 3 + 2 = 5. As a child advances, s/he will learn procedures for adding numbers of any size, such as 152 + 23 = ?. Answers to these problems can be computed, but our procedures assume that the basics have been learned: in this case, addition of single digit numbers.

It is remarkable how much of a hurdle the basics can be for many children. There are important concepts in early arithmetic, but the committing to memory of the basic math facts is not a particularly meaningful activity for most. Yet, learning the basics is crucial. Difficulties with basic math facts -- simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, can erode a child's progress and interest in later mathematics. Evidence suggests that large proportions of children in the 7th or 8th grade or beyond have not really mastered all the basic facts of multiplication or even subtraction and addition. Imagine the difficulty of a child being taught algebra in the 8th or 9th grade who is never really sure what 9 x 8 equals.

Part of the problem is a lack of really good ways to teach these facts and make sure they have been learned. Our goal at Insight Learning Technology, Inc. has been to apply to this problem the cutting edge of computer-based techniques for getting this learning to occur in the simplest and most efficient way possible. What we have come up is simply the most efficient way ever for a child to learn basic math facts. Plus, our novel methods do two other important things: They give completely objective assessment of what has and has not been learned. And, they ensure that learning occurs in a way that will be best retained over time.

Geography Insight™

Geography has been an age old learning domain that many children still have a difficult time mastering. Geography Insight™ utilizes the sequencing technology found in our math and vocabulary products along with techniques of visual presentation that optimize the pick-up of perceptual learning cues to foster long-lasting learning of geography. Geography Insight™ focuses on many of the countries of Africa but development is already being planned to expand this to the entire continent of Africa, the Middle East, and South America.

Key Features

Perceptual Learning

Perceptual learning addresses aspects of learning, such as pattern recognition, that are difficult to teach using conventional methods. Accuracy and fluency are developed in visualizing, recognizing, mapping, and manipulating concepts and representations that are essential in math and science learning as well as other domains.

Learners get immediate feedback, with illustrations and animations that help them figure out the patterns and relationships that underlie correct answers. The feedback also provides visual guides that help students draw on their pattern processing skills to diagnose and correct their errors.

The activities in these modules have been shown to have powerful, long-lasting effects on students' learning. These methods can apply to almost any learning domain, and their potential has only begun to be realized. These research-based innovations in learning technology promise to empower learners in new and transformative ways.

Sequencing

At the heart of our learning products are patented procedures that determine what learning item should come next at any time to optimize the learning. These revolutionary computer-based instructional techniques use the accuracy and speed of the learner on various learning items to determine what comes next.

Spacing

Powering some of our automated sequencing procedures are important principles of learning. These guarantee that learning items will not be repeated to soon or too late, both of which can impede learning. In fact, the delay between seeing a partly learned item one time and the next changes through the learning period to optimize learning and retention.

Tracking Accuracy and Speed

Unlike most assessment of learning, we automatically monitor and track the learner's accuracy and speed for individual learning items. Both accuracy and quick, fluent understanding are important in learning, and Insight's BBM™ and Word Insight™ handle both to optimize learning.

Objective Learning Criteria

Learning proceeds to an objective standard of mastery for every item to be learned. This is one of the advantages of a computer-based aid to learning -- of basic math and many other kinds of material. The program "knows" what the learner knows and brings items back at optimal intervals to achieve durable learning. A parent or teacher can see the progress that has been made, but the student gains the most: A clear knowledge that the set of learning items has been mastered, and the confidence and satisfaction that go with that knowledge.

Retirement

Our products focus efforts where learning is needed most. The software can tell when particular items have been well-learned. These are retired from the learning set for that session, so effort can be focused on what still needs to be learned.

Bells, Whistles, Learning, and Entertainment

One thing you will notice when you or your learners use our products is that we differ in style from some other educational software. Our products focus on the learning task. We do not make up games or stories for the child to participate in, during which learning is supposed to occur incidentally.

This contrast is intentional. Although the prevailing trend in educational software is to use games, stories, and recently, lifelike talking heads, there is no evidence that these things confer any benefit to learning. A growing body of research suggests the opposite: These "bells and whistles" often confer no learning benefit and may in fact compete with learning. A common observation is that the children learn the story or the game, but not the mathematics that has been threaded into the program. Put simply, there is very little evidence for most educational software showing that it actually works. BBM™, Word Insight™ and related products using similar learning concepts have been shown to improve the efficiency and level of learning in scientifically designed studies.

Motivation

Without stories and games, how can the learner be engaged? Motivation is important. We believe, however, in a direct and honest approach to learning. Learning math or other subjects requires some effort. BBM™ and Word Insight™ are designed to maximize the results and the efficiency of the student's effort. But we believe students, parents, and teachers need to acknowlege that some time needs to be committed to learn math. With even a small commitment, well-designed learning software will motivate. The student realizes the benefits of understanding, and of mastery. These build confidence and satisfaction and help sustain the natural human interest in learning. For mathematics, with a sound foundation given by BBM™, the student will have a better chance of seeing the beauty and the structure of mathematics learned later. This is the true motivation for learning this subject, and we believe that it can be nurtured in all students.
