Even in an age of calculators, every child must learn basic math facts. When we first begin to learn arithmetic, along with the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, there are some basic facts that need to be understood and remembered. For example, 3 + 2 = 5. As a child advances, s/he will learn procedures for adding numbers of any size, such as 152 + 23 = ?. Answers to these problems can be computed, but our procedures assume that the basics have been learned: in this case, addition of single digit numbers.
It is remarkable how much of a hurdle the basics can be for many children. There are important concepts in early arithmetic, but the committing to memory of the basic math facts is not a particularly meaningful activity for most. Yet, learning the basics is crucial.
